India parliament incident – level 2

15-12-2023 15:00

A surprising incident happened in India’s parliament. Two men entered the building, released yellow smoke, and shouted.

Both houses of parliament stopped working for some time but police and security quickly caught the men and took them to custody. They also arrested two more people outside the building. Reportedly, one of the men was a student who protested against unemployment.

This incident happened on the 22nd anniversary of a 2001 terror attack on the Indian parliament, where gunmen killed nine security officers. The attack brought more tensions between India and Pakistan.

Difficult words: unemployment (when many people are without a job), tension (a situation when people or groups are nervous and they don’t trust each other).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What country was the student protesting against unemployment from and on what significant anniversary did this incident occur?
