Indonesia stadium tragedy – level 2

06-10-2022 07:00

125 people died and 180 were hurt in one of the worst stadium disasters.

In Malang, East Java, the incident happened on Saturday after a soccer match where the home team lost. Angry fans ran into the pitch, and security wanted to control the crowd, so they fired tear gas. To escape, people ran towards the exits, where some of them suffocated. Officials later said that 42,000 tickets were sold, but the stadium’s capacity was only 38,000 people.

Officials started to investigate the incident, and the International Football Association FIFA asked the Indonesian government for a report. According to FIFA’s rules, security at soccer matches mustn’t use weapons or tear gas.

Difficult words: pitch (the area where some sports happen), suffocate (to die because of not enough air), capacity (the number of people or things that fit somewhere).
