Indonesia transgender school – level 3

09-12-2022 15:00

Homosexuality is illegal in 69 countries, and in many, it leads to long prison sentences and the death penalty by public stoning or hanging.

Many of these countries are very religious, and families and communities reject homosexual and transgender people for being against their faith.

However, in Yogykarta, Indonesia, a majority Muslim country, a boarding school exists for transgender women. Shinta Ratri founded the school 14 years ago. As a transgender woman, she believed a safe place was essential for these women.

Ratri risked her life to save others, and she plans to continue her fight. The Al-Fatah Islamic School has over 60 students, and it maintains the country’s Islamic values. According to some women, their main struggles are understanding both their faith and their identity.

Difficult words: stoning (punishment by throwing stones), boarding school (a school where students live and study).
