Iran arrests Narges Mohammadi – level 2
19-12-2025 15:00
Iranian police arrested Narges Mohammadi, a famous activist and Nobel Prize winner, at a meeting for a lawyer who died. Other activists were also arrested in Mashhad.
Mohammadi works for women’s rights and democracy. She got the Nobel Prize in 2023 while in prison. The Nobel Committee said her arrest was very bad. Experts say her arrest shows the risk for people who work for rights in Iran. Many lawyers and activists live outside the country. Mohammadi was at a meeting where people spoke against the government. There were many protests in Iran since 2022, and the government keeps strong control over the people.
Even with attention from other countries, Mohammadi is still in prison. Her story shows it is hard to speak against the government. Many people are now brave and speak openly in public and online.
Difficult words: activist (a person who works to make changes in society or help people), democracy (a system where people vote to choose their leaders and make rules), attention (when many people watch something and know about it).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Where have many lawyers and activists chosen to live due to the risks involved in rights work in Iran?
