Iran arrests Narges Mohammadi – level 3
19-12-2025 15:00
Iranian police have arrested Narges Mohammadi, a well-known activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, at a memorial for a human rights lawyer.
Several other activists were also arrested in the city of Mashhad. Mohammadi works for democracy and women’s rights and received the Nobel Prize in 2023 while in prison. The Nobel Committee called her arrest brutal.
Experts say her arrest shows the danger faced by people who fight for rights in Iran. Many lawyers and activists now live in exile. Mohammadi was at a meeting where people spoke against the government, which may have caused the police to act. There have been many protests in Iran since 2022, and the government continues with strict control.
Despite global attention, Mohammadi remains in prison. Her story shows how hard it is to speak against the government. Many people are now brave and speak openly online or in public, despite the risks.
Difficult words: memorial (a meeting or event to remember someone who has died), brutal (very cruel or violent), exile (living away from home for safety).
