Israeli Government Problems – level 3

20-03-2020 15:00

The Israeli president, Reuven Rivlin, said on Sunday that he wants politician Benny Gantz to create a new Israeli government. Gantz is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rival.

This decision came after three elections have failed to create a new government or come to a consensus, and after the three men met to work on this issue.

Netanyahu belongs to Likud party, which gained the most seats in the March 2nd election, but it did not get control of parliament. The other parties have a majority of 62 seats, and they recommended Gantz to be the next prime minister. However, support is not strong.

Due to other issues in the world, Netanyahu’s bribery and corruption trial has been delayed.

Difficult words: rival (an enemy), consensus (an agreement), seat (a position in a group in a government; your group is more powerful if it has more seats).
