Italy’s oldest woman sprinter – level 2

21-05-2024 15:00

Italy has the oldest population in the European Union. One in four people is over 65 years old.

It is no surprise that Italy has the world’s fastest 90-year-old woman sprinter, Emma Maria Mazzenga. Mazzenga was born on August 1, 1933. She set a new world record by running 200 meters in 51.47 seconds. She holds five world records and many European and Italian records in Masters sprinting, which is for older runners. Mazzenga was happy and surprised by her latest record. She often runs without rivals in her age group and focuses on getting good times.

Mazzenga started running again at 53 and finds it comforting and social. She will compete in the Italian championships in June and hopes to take part in the world championships in Sweden next year. But she jokes about not making many plans.

Difficult words: rival (a person or group who competes with others), focus (to give special attention to something), comforting (making you feel less sad or worried).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Who is Emma Maria Mazzenga and what records does she hold in Masters sprinting?
