Italy’s oldest woman sprinter – level 3

21-05-2024 15:00

Italy has the oldest population in the European Union, and one in four people are over 65.

The country is home to the world’s fastest 90-year-old woman sprinter, Emma Maria Mazzenga. Born on August 1, 1933, Mazzenga recently set a new world record in the 90 and over age group by running 200 meters in 51.47 seconds. She holds five world records, nine European records, and 28 Italian records in Masters sprinting. Masters sprinting is competitive racing for older athletes. Mazzenga expressed her surprise and happiness at her latest achievement. Despite often having no direct rivals in her age category, she focuses on achieving good times.

Mazzenga started running again at 53 after a long break and finds great comfort and community in her athletic career. She plans to compete in the Italian championships in June and hopes to attend the world championships in Sweden next year, though she jokes about not making long-term plans.

Difficult words: achievement (things done successfully with effort), rival (a person or group competing with others).
