Madagascar political crisis – level 2

20-10-2025 15:00

In Madagascar, President Andry Rajoelina hides after people tried to harm him. Many young protesters, called ‘Gen Z Mada,’ asked him to resign because of unemployment, corruption, and high living costs.

The protests grew when some soldiers joined them. Rajoelina ended the national assembly and fired most of his government. He spoke on Facebook but didn’t say where he was. People don’t know who leads the country now. Opposition groups try to convince members of the ruling party to remove him.

People first want better water and electricity, but now they want the president to leave. They are worried about the future of the country and hope for a new government and elections soon.

Difficult words: resign (to leave a job or position), national assembly (a group of people who make laws for a country), convince (to make someone believe or agree with you).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why did many young protesters known as ‘Gen Z Mada’ demand President Rajoelina’s resignation?
