Madagascar political crisis – level 3

20-10-2025 15:00

Madagascar faces political turmoil as President Andry Rajoelina goes into hiding after an assassination attempt.

Weeks of nationwide protests, mainly led by young demonstrators called ‘Gen Z Mada,’ demanded his resignation due to issues like unemployment, corruption, and the high cost of living.

The protests escalated when an elite army unit joined, intensifying pressure on the president. Rajoelina dissolved the national assembly and dismissed his government, appointing only a few ministers. In a Facebook broadcast, he confirmed he left the country for safety but didn’t reveal his location, leaving citizens uncertain about who governs the country. Opposition leaders now aim to impeach him, but they need to convince ruling party MPs to proceed.

The unrest stems from long-standing problems that the president failed to resolve over his years in power. People demanded better access to basic services, but the movement expanded to call for leadership change. The political future remains uncertain as the opposition seeks to organize elections and a transitional government.

Difficult words: turmoil (a situation with a lot of confusion, problems, or chaos), elite (a small, powerful, or important group of people), impeach (to formally accuse a leader of wrongdoing), transitional government (a temporary government that rules until a new official government is ready).
