Navalny gets 19 more years in prison – level 3

09-08-2023 07:00

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to an additional 19 years in a high-security penal colony on charges he claims are meant to suppress political dissent.

Navalny, a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, is currently serving an 11.5-year sentence for alleged fraud. His political movement has been banned as extremist. The verdict was delivered in Melekhovo, and Navalny stated that he perceives it as a lifetime imprisonment aimed at intimidating the Russian people.

International reactions have condemned the verdict as politically motivated, with the U.S. and EU calling for his release. Navalny’s imprisonment is seen as a symbol of resistance against Putin’s regime.

Difficult words: penal colony (a place where prisoners serve sentences), dissent (strong difference of opinion), intimidate (to frighten).
