New Greek Prime Minister – level 2

17-07-2019 07:00

Kyriakos Mitsotakis became Greece’s new prime minister last Monday. In his campaign, he promised to make the country more business-friendly and reinvigorate the economy by lowering taxes.

He is the leader of a conservative party, which won 40% of the vote. That translates to 158 seats out of 300 in the country’s parliament. His election signals a turn from mainstream political parties to populists and Eurosceptics.

Difficult words: reinvigorate (give new energy to), election (the fact that he was elected – chosen by the people), populist (a politician who says that he is going to help ‘ordinary/normal’ people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
