New Greek Prime Minister – level 3

17-07-2019 07:00

Greece’s new prime minister, conservative party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was sworn in last Monday. His election signals a turn from mainstream political parties to populists and Eurosceptics.

Mitsotakis ran a campaign of reinvigorating Greece’s economy by lowering taxes and making the country more business-friendly, among other things. His party won 40% of the vote, giving him 158 seats out of 300 in the country’s parliament.

Difficult words: swear in (officially become prime minister), populist (a politician who says that he is going to help ‘ordinary/normal’ people), reinvigorate (give new energy to).
