Nose surgery for cocaine users – level 2

02-04-2024 15:00

Doctors in Belgium are treating more patients with nose problems.

These patients are usually in their forties, they are managers, teachers, or people who work in banking. And they use cocaine. Cocaine narrows blood vessels in the nose, which damages the tissue and makes holes. In some cases, patients need a nose reconstruction.

But many patients can’t undergo surgery because they mustn’t use cocaine for at least six months before the surgery for good healing. So although there are more cocaine users, the number of surgeries is not growing much.

Difficult words: vessel (a tube which carries blood through the body), tissue (the material which animals and plants are made of), reconstruction (rebuilding or repairing something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some reasons why patients with nose problems in Belgium may not be able to undergo surgery for at least six months, even though they use cocaine?
