Orcas and dolphins hunt together – level 2
16-12-2025 07:00
Scientists find that orcas and dolphins work together to find salmon near the coast of Canada.
This action is unusual. Researchers see it by accident during another study. They later use flying cameras and small tags to watch the animals from the air and under the water.
The animals swim close to each other many times. Dolphins dive deep and use sound to find fish. Orcas follow the dolphins and listen to these sounds. In this way, the whales find big salmon which dolphins cannot eat alone.
Orcas catch the salmon and break it for their family group. Dolphins eat the small food pieces. Both animals get food from this plan. Experts say this kind of help can support animals when food is less easy to find.
Difficult words: accident (something what happens without a plan), tag (a small object which scientists put on an animal to watch it or learn about it), support (to help).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How do dolphins assist orcas in locating large salmon during their cooperative hunts?
