Orcas and dolphins hunt together – level 3

16-12-2025 07:00

A new study shows that two ocean hunters, northern resident orcas and Pacific white sided dolphins, work together to find salmon near the coast of Canada.

This behavior is rare in the animal world. Scientists first saw it by chance during another project. Later, they used small flying cameras and tags to watch the animals underwater and from above.

The videos show that the two animals often move close to each other. The orcas turn toward the dolphins and follow them into deep water. Dolphins use sound to find fish, while the orcas stay quiet and listen to these sounds. In this way, the whales can find large salmon that dolphins cannot eat by themselves.

After the orcas catch the fish, they break it into parts for their group. The dolphins then eat the small pieces left behind. This action helps both animals. Experts say this teamwork may help them survive when food is harder to find and the ocean becomes noisier.

Difficult words: rare (not common, not seen often), tag (a small object put on an animal to watch it or learn about it).

In their joint salmon hunts, how do Pacific white-sided dolphins and northern resident orcas each contribute to finding and capturing their prey?
