People in New Zealand look for food – level 1

15-04-2022 15:00

Christchurch is a large city in New Zealand’s South Island. Two big earthquakes hurt the city in 2010 and 2011.

The earthquakes destroy more than 7,500 homes. A part of the city becomes too dangerous. It is not possible to build new houses there. Gardens full of fruit trees are still there. These trees grow and make fruit.

Food gets very expensive in New Zealand in recent years. People look for ways to get cheap food. They discover the wild gardens full of fruit trees. People pick fruit, nuts, and mushrooms there.

Many people look for food. It is cheap. Some people are happy that they spend more time in nature. They see how trees and plants grow. They say that wild fruit tastes much better than fruit from a supermarket.

Difficult words: earthquake (when the earth moves, and it destroys houses and other things), dangerous (not safe), discover (to find).
