People protest against tourism – level 2
23-07-2025 07:00
In some countries like Spain and Mexico, people are angry about tourists. In Barcelona, locals used water guns on tourists. Protests happened in other places, too.
Many visitors make cities full and busy. They also make rent more expensive. Some people cannot find a place to live because of tourist rentals.
More tourists also use more water and power, and some cities don’t have enough. Shops change to gift stores, and local people feel like strangers in their own home. Social media and cheap flights bring more people to the same places just to take pictures.
But not all countries feel this way. Thailand and Morocco still want more tourists. Some places now use tourist taxes or rules to help. People should try to travel in a way that is good for locals.
Difficult words: rent (money you pay to live in a home), rental (a place you pay to live in), tourist tax (a small fee a tourist has to pay to some towns or cities).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What did local residents in Barcelona use against tourists to express their frustration?
