People protest against tourism – level 3

23-07-2025 07:00

In many countries, especially in Europe, local people are growing frustrated with the large number of tourists. In places like Barcelona and Mexico, protests have taken place, and in some cases, they have even turned violent.

A big reason for this anger is that tourism has made cities crowded, raised housing costs, and put pressure on local resources, such as water, electricity, and waste systems. Cities like Barcelona now struggle to offer affordable housing as short-term rentals dominate the market. Some people also feel that tourism destroys community life. Local shops and homes are turning into souvenir stores and tourist rentals. Social media plays a big role, too. It sends thousands of people to the same locations just for one photo, which can cause chaos. Flights are cheaper now, so more people can travel, which adds to the problem.

Still, many countries want more tourists. Places like Thailand, Vietnam, and Morocco depend on them. Governments are trying to balance economic needs with protecting local life.

Difficult words: affordable (inexpensive), dominate (to take over or control something), chaos (a state of disorder and confusion).
