Puppets give food to birds – level 1
15-08-2025 07:00
In the Prague Zoo, workers feed baby vultures with puppets. The puppets look like the bird parents. The real parents do not feed the babies now.
The zoo workers want the baby birds to know other vultures, not people. If the birds think people are their parents, they have a problem. This is called imprinting. The puppets help the birds feel safe and learn. The zoo does this with other birds, too.
Prague Zoo is one of the few zoos that care for these vultures in Europe. This way, the birds grow well and can live with other vultures later.
Difficult words: vulture (a large bird which eats dead animals), puppet (a toy which looks like a person or animal).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What do zoo workers call the situation in which baby vultures mistake people for their parents?
