Puppets give food to birds – level 2
15-08-2025 07:00
At the Prague Zoo, workers use puppets to feed baby vultures. The puppets look like the parents of the vultures.
The zookeepers started feeding the baby vultures by hand because the real parents stopped caring for them. If the birds get too used to people, they may not learn how to live with other vultures. This is a problem called imprinting. To stop this, the zoo uses puppets that look like vultures, so the babies think they are with their own species. The zoo also used this way with other birds before.
Prague Zoo is one of the few places in Europe to raise these vultures, also called savannah vultures. This helps the birds grow up strong and ready for the wild.
Difficult words: puppet (a model which looks like a person or animal), vulture (a large bird which eats dead animals), species (a group of animals which are of the same kind).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What problem are the zookeepers trying to prevent by using vulture‐shaped puppets when hand‐feeding the chicks?
