Russian drones near Romanian borders – level 2

28-11-2025 15:00

Romania quickly sent NATO fighter jets into the air after military radar systems showed suspected Russian drones flying very close to the Ukrainian city of Izmail, which is right next to the Romanian border.

First, two German Eurofighter Typhoons flew as part of NATO’s air patrols, and later two Romanian F-16 planes joined them when new unknown objects appeared near Snake Island. None of the Russian drones managed to fly into Romanian airspace, and after some time, the objects disappeared from the radar screens. Officials confirmed loud explosions just across the border on the Ukrainian side, where radars detected the drones.

Romanian officials said that these border incidents, caused by Russian attacks in Ukraine, are now happening regularly. This situation caused previous alerts and made it necessary for local people to leave their homes. People worry that the war will spread into the NATO territory.

Difficult words: suspect (to believe that someone or something is probably guilty of an action or is the cause of a situation), air patrol (jets or helicopters that fly over an area to keep it safe), disappear (to stop being visible or to stop existing), alert (a signal that tells people about a danger or problem), regularly (happening often or at fixed times).
