Russian drones near Romanian borders – level 3

28-11-2025 15:00

Romania quickly deployed NATO-allied fighter jets, including German Eurofighter Typhoons and later Romanian F-16s, after sophisticated radar systems detected suspected Russian drones operating close to the Romanian border, near the

important Ukrainian port city of Izmail.

These aerial interceptions were conducted under standing NATO air policing duties, initially prompted by the appearance of targets and later reinforced as additional objects were detected near Snake Island. Although no foreign Unmanned Aerial Vehicles entered Romanian airspace, and the radar targets eventually dissipated, explosions were officially reported on the Ukrainian side of the border.

The Romanian Defence Ministry noted that these cross-border events have become alarmingly frequent, necessitating previous civilian evacuations and formal alerts. These repeated incidents have prompted the government to issue warnings about the escalating risks of regional spillover and the potential for the conflict to unintentionally extend into NATO territory.

Difficult words: interception (the action of stopping or preventing someone or something from reaching their intended destination), dissipate (to disappear gradually), alarmingly (in a way that causes worry or fear), necessitate (to make something necessary or require something to be done), spillover (the effect of an event or situation that spreads into another area).
