Social media and our health – level 1

04-06-2024 07:00

Jordi is 18 years old. She serves coffee in Charville, a small town in Australia.

Jordi uses social media a lot. Some time ago, she spends 7-8 hours a day on TikTok and Snapchat. Now, it is about 5.5 hours. She reduces her time online. She feels bad about herself. She thinks that she must look perfect. Boys at her school tell her to kill herself on TikTok. It makes her very unhappy. Even after all this, it is hard for Jordi to stop using social media. She does not want to miss out on something important.

Dr. Werner-Sidler studies how social media affects teenagers and their mental health. Tech companies have rules. But people do not always follow them. Jordi wants stronger rules for social media. She is happy that her mom helps her use it less.

Difficult words: social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others), reduce (to make something smaller or less), mental health (how you feel, how you can learn, think, and communicate with others).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What changes does Jordi want to see in the rules for social media, and who helps her reduce her usage?
