Social media brings protests and problems in Asia – level 2

01-10-2025 07:00

Across Asia, protests grow, bring down governments in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, and people fill the streets in Nepal and Indonesia.

Young people often use social media to plan and share ideas. Platforms like TikTok and Discord helped them connect quickly, but they also spread false stories. In Nepal, videos showed children of politicians enjoying luxury while many young people couldn’t find work. Anger grew, and misinformation spread rumours about temple attacks. A map of politicians’ homes led some people to burn houses, which caused injuries.

Experts say social media can be powerful, but it is also dangerous. With new elections coming, they worry that false information will grow even stronger.

Difficult words: luxury (something very expensive and not necessary), misinformation (wrong or false information that people share), rumour (information that may not be true, passed from person to person).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What were the consequences of circulating a map of politicians’ homes on social media in Nepal?
