South Africa beats Italy at the World Cup – level 2

07-08-2023 07:00

South Africa celebrated their first Women’s World Cup win. The team beat Italy 3-2 and secured a spot in the last 16.

The match was intense, and Thembi Kgatlana’s last-minute goal ensured their victory. Italy had hoped for a draw to continue in the cup, but it was not meant to be. The Italians took the lead with a penalty, but South Africa equalized due to an own goal. Later, South Africa went ahead, and Italy responded with another goal from a corner. In the end, Kgatlana’s goal secured the win for South Africa.

Coach Desiree Ellis praised her team’s fighting spirit and historic achievement. Next, South Africa will face the Netherlands in Sydney on Sunday.

Difficult words: ensure (to make certain that something will happen), draw (when a game ends with the score even), equalize (to level the score in a match).
