South Africa beats Italy at the World Cup – level 3

07-08-2023 07:00

South Africa secured their first-ever Women’s World Cup win with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Italy, advancing to the last 16 of the tournament.

Thembi Kgatlana scored the winning goal in stoppage time, crushing Italy’s hopes of progressing with just a draw. Earlier, Italy had taken the lead through a penalty, but an own goal helped South Africa level the score. In the second half, South Africa went ahead, only for Italy to equalize from a corner. In the end, Kgatlana’s late heroics sealed the win for South Africa. Coach Desiree Ellis praised her team’s fighting spirit and historic achievement.

Now, South Africa is set to face the Netherlands in the next round.

Difficult words: stoppage time (the period that is added to the end of the game because play was stopped during the game), equalize (to level the score in a match by scoring a goal), heroics (unusual actions or achievements).
