Storm Goretti hits Europe – level 3

13-01-2026 15:00

Strong winds, snow, and freezing temperatures have hit large parts of western Europe after the arrival of Storm Goretti. Weather experts gave serious warnings in several countries.

In southwest England, officials gave a rare red warning for wind, with speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour and dangerous conditions near the sea. In France, strong winds caused power cuts, and many homes lost electricity. In northern Germany, heavy snow and wind caused major problems. Some areas received up to 20 centimeters of snow, which disrupted schools, and many students stayed at home or learned online. Authorities asked people to avoid travel because roads and paths became unsafe. Workers used many vehicles to clear snow and spread salt to make roads safer. Train services in northern Germany ran less often, and airports warned of delays and cancellations.

Some areas later received lighter warnings, but cold weather continued. Officials advised people to travel only when necessary and to stay careful during the storm.

Difficult words: rare (not common, not happening often), disrupt (to stop something from working normally), avoid (to stay away from something).
