Terrorist Award – level 3

06-06-2017 07:00

Teachers were disciplined for giving a 13-year-old student a ‘terrorist award’ on a certificate for her work in a school support program. The student, Lizeth Villaueva, said that terrorists do terrible things, such as what happened at the Ariana Grande concert, and that it is ‘not something to joke around with’. She received the offensive award after the terrorist attack in Manchester.

Her mother said that the teachers should imagine how her daughter might feel when she grows up, and she wanted to know why her daughter received the certificate.

The teachers said that the certificate was intended to be light-hearted. The school district did not disclose the punishment for the teachers.

Difficult words: discipline (punish or train), light-hearted (funny), disclose (tell).
