Turkey Earthquake – level 2

09-11-2020 15:00

Last week, an earthquake hit the Turkish city of Izmir. Officials said that the earthquake was a magnitude between 6.6 and 7.

Several buildings collapsed in the city, which killed at least 80 people. Thousands of people worked all weekend and they tried to rescue missing people from the rubble. They used diggers to put the rubble away. They saved a 70-year-old man who stayed in the rubble for 33 hours. They also rescued a 14-year-old girl, and when an ambulance was taking the girl away, all rescue workers cheered and clapped.

The earthquake also killed two teenagers on the Greek island of Samos.

Difficult words: magnitude (how strong an earthquake is), digger (a heavy machine that makes holes in the ground), cheer (to shout happily).
