Ukraine prepares for winter – level 2

14-11-2022 07:00

Huliaipole is a village in eastern Ukraine in the Zaporizhia region. Russia said that it took over this region, and soldiers are still fighting there.

The war in Ukraine started eight months ago, but the most difficult time for Ukrainian people is coming now. People are preparing for winter without electricity or gas. Temperatures in winter fall far below zero, and many people aren’t sure how to survive.

Russian rockets hit important infrastructure, and people in Huliaipole were without electricity for three months. They live in small basements with too many people in one room, but it helps them survive.

Ukraine’s president said that 4.5 million people were without electricity. Power companies do blackouts to stop the infrastructure from failing. Workers repair damaged infrastructure, but they must work fast. Sometimes they work in areas which are under Russian attack.

Difficult words: survive (to live through a difficult situation), infrastructure (buildings and physical things that provide services), blackout (no electricity in an area or town).
