Ukraine’s first underground school – level 2

17-05-2024 07:00

A new school in Kharkiv, Ukraine, is underground to keep children safe from Russian attacks.

Many students started classes this week in the bunker, 6 meters below the ground. The entrance is a small white concrete box, and the classrooms are bright but have no windows. Kharkiv is close to the Russian border. Russia attacked it several times since the war started 26 months ago. The underground school is important because children can see their teachers and friends.

The school has 300 students now and will have 900 by September. Mayor Ihor Terekhov wants this school to help children live normal lives. Many children wore traditional Ukrainian shirts for the opening day.

Difficult words: bunker (a place where people can hide), entrance (an opening which allows you to get to a place), traditional (usual, typical).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the purpose of the underground school in Kharkiv, Ukraine and how many students is it expected to have by September?
