Vote in Kashmir – level 3

29-10-2019 07:00

In August, India canceled Kashmir’s autonomy which means that Kashmir cannot have its own constitution. Some politicians believe that it will stop terrorism in a region where most people are Muslim.

However, this started big protests. Thousands of soldiers came to the area and more than 4000 people were arrested, including many politicians.

Recently, Kashmiris elected the leaders of more than 300 local councils. 98 percent of all voters came to vote. Many voters did not feel that the elections were true because so many politicians were arrested. The main political parties boycotted the elections, and independent candidates won around 70 percent of the seats.

Difficult words: autonomy (independence), constitution (the political rules of a country), boycott (not take part as a way of a protest).
