Young people and cancer – level 2

10-07-2025 15:00

Bowel cancer cases in people under 50 are going up in many countries.

England has one of the highest increases, with 3.6% more cases every year. Poor diet, obesity, and not enough exercise might cause this rise, but experts are not sure yet. Better testing and genetic factors may also be part of the problem.

Cancer Research UK is studying why younger people are getting bowel cancer more often. They are also finding ways to stop it. While bowel cancer is still rare in young adults, it is important to see a doctor early if you notice symptoms. These include changes in bowel habits, weight loss, or feeling very tired. Early treatment gives the best chance to recover.

Difficult words: bowel (the long tube that carries waste from the stomach out of the body), rare (not common, or very usual), symptom (a sign of illness).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which symptoms should prompt a young adult to see a doctor early for the best chance of recovering from bowel cancer?
