Young people in India cannot find a job – level 2

13-05-2024 15:00

India, the world’s biggest democracy, is currently holding national elections. There are several phases over weeks so that nearly one billion voters can take part.

Last week, millions were voting in the third phase across 95 areas. All seven phases will end on June 1st. Youth unemployment is a big problem. Half of India’s 1.4 billion population is under 30, and finding a job is getting more and more difficult for them.

India’s Prime Minister got to power in 2014. He promised millions of jobs but failed. He would like to win the elections again, but the question for millions of Indians is if he can deal with the problem this time.

Difficult words: phase (a stage in a series of events or a process), youth (young people), unemployment (a situation in which someone doesn’t have a job).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is one of the major issues facing the youth in India, and how might it impact the current Prime Minister's chances in the ongoing national elections?
