Physics Nobel Prize – level 3

10-10-2025 15:00

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 is awarded to John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis for their research in quantum mechanics, which allows tiny particles to behave in unusual ways and lays the foundation for modern quantum computers.

Their discoveries show how the strange properties of the quantum world can be used on a larger, human scale. These computers can perform calculations much faster than conventional machines and solve problems in finance, logistics, and cryptography that normal computers struggle with.

The prize was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden. The three scientists will share a total of 11 million Swedish kronor. Their research, which began decades ago, connects basic science with technological applications. It has helped develop electron tunneling devices and microchips, forming the basis for today’s quantum computing industry. Experts believe this work will continue to shape technology and expand our understanding of quantum mechanics in practical ways.

Difficult words: quantum mechanics (a branch of science that studies very tiny things like atoms and particles, and how they behave in unusual ways), property (a characteristic or feature of something, describing how it behaves or looks), cryptography (the science or practice of making secret codes to protect information).

What technological devices did their decades-long research help develop that now form the basis for today’s quantum computing industry?
