Indian pilots have to rest more – level 3

10-12-2025 07:00

India faced serious problems at airports after new rules gave pilots more rest.

Many flights were canceled, and passengers were left angry and confused. The rules aimed to improve safety, but the country’s largest airline, Indigo, couldn’t manage its schedules. Passengers waited for hours and sometimes paid high prices for other tickets.

Indigo first said the cancellations happened because of operational problems, but later admitted mismanagement. The company didn’t hire enough pilots or staff to follow the rules, even though they had time to prepare. This caused a chain reaction of delays and cancellations across the country. Aviation authorities gave Indigo temporary relief while they investigate what went wrong.

Experts say Indigo has a large share of the market, which made the problem worse. Some suggest the government should allow more competition and support smaller airlines. The goal is to prevent one company from affecting the whole system and to protect passengers.

Difficult words: aim (to have a goal or purpose), schedule (a plan of times for events), mismanagement (poor organization), competition (rivalry between companies).

What did Indigo later acknowledge as the real cause of its flight cancellations after first blaming operational problems?
