30 years since the Srebrenica killings – level 2
15-07-2025 07:00
Bosnia and Herzegovina remembers the Srebrenica massacre 30 years later. In 1995, about 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys died. Bosnian Serb forces killed them. It was the worst crime in Europe after World War II.
The memorial is in Potočari, where a museum shows the history of the massacre. Many people visit every year to remember the victims. This year, seven more people will be buried. Authorities found and identified them only recently. Their families can now say goodbye to them. Thousands of people come to the event to show respect.
Some leaders in Bosnia and Serbia don’t accept that this was genocide. They also support the people who did the killings. Many Bosnians still want peace and hope for help from Europe to fix the situation.
Difficult words: memorial (a place which helps people remember a person or event), massacre (killing a lot of people), genocide (killing many people because of how they look or what they believe in).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How many additional victims will be buried this year after authorities found and identified them only recently?
