30 years since the Srebrenica killings – level 3
15-07-2025 07:00
Bosnia and Herzegovina is marking 30 years since the Srebrenica massacre. In July 1995, about 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces. This was the worst crime in Europe since World War II.
The commemoration is held at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, which used to be a base and is now a museum showing exhibits and documents related to the genocide. Every year, newly identified victims are buried in the Potočari Cemetery. This year, seven more graves were prepared for this ceremony. Many people, including family members and other citizens, attend to remember the victims.
Although the massacre is internationally recognized as genocide, some political leaders in the Republika Srpska entity of Bosnia and Serbia still deny that it happened. Some even glorify the people responsible for it. This continues to divide the country.
Many Bosnians hope for unity and a better future. Experts say this will require more support from the European Union and changes to the country’s legal and political systems.
Difficult words: commemoration (a ceremony to remember an important event), genocide (the killing of a large group of people because of their race, religion, or culture), glorify (to praise someone or something as being great, especially when it is wrong or harmful).
