80 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki – level 2

11-08-2025 07:00

Eighty years after the bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, survivors still speak about the danger of nuclear weapons.

Over 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. Shingo Naito was six when the bomb hit. His father was badly hurt and died four days later. His younger brother and sister also died.

Now, students are helping to tell his story. They listened to him and made paintings to show what he saw. One girl said it was hard to imagine the pain, but felt it was important to share his story with others.

Today, survivors are worried about war again. They talk about the fighting in Ukraine, Gaza, and bombings in Iran. They want people to learn from the past and stop using nuclear weapons.

Difficult words: survivor (a person who lives after something terrible happens), nuclear (using powerful energy from atoms), pain (when something hurts).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did students do to show what Shingo Naito saw?
