80 years since Hiroshima and Nagasaki – level 3

11-08-2025 07:00

Eighty years after the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, survivors continue to speak out against nuclear weapons.

Around 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. Survivors like Shingo Naito share painful memories, and younger generations are helping by painting and telling their stories. These efforts aim to ensure the horrors of the past are not forgotten. Shingo Naito remembers the moment the bomb struck—his father was burned and blinded, and his younger siblings didn’t survive. Despite their injuries, his parents tried to keep the family together. His story moved many young people, who now feel a strong duty to pass it on.

The survivors warn that nuclear weapons still pose a danger today. With conflicts continuing in Ukraine, Gaza, and recent bombings of nuclear sites in Iran, fears of another nuclear disaster are growing. Hiroshima now stands as a symbol of peace, and its message is clear: no nation should ever suffer such destruction again.

Difficult words: speak out against (to say strongly that you don’t agree with something or think it is wrong), pose (to cause or create a danger, problem, or difficulty), destruction (damaging something so badly that it no longer exists or works).

How have younger generations helped ensure that the horrors experienced by survivors like Shingo Naito are not forgotten?
