A man hides in a Christmas scene – level 3

23-12-2025 07:00

A 38-year-old man in Italy was a wanted person for assaulting a police officer and trying to avoid prison. He tried to hide by being part of a town’s Christmas nativity scene.

The town’s mayor noticed him while passing the display and first thought he was a figure in the scene. Then he realised it was a real person. The mayor called another official to ask the man to leave; however, the man said the Christmas scene was his home. Local police and state workers came and identified the man as a fugitive. He had a prison sentence of nine months and 15 days for not listening to a police officer and for a violent attack.

The mayor thanked the police and said this showed it was very important to trust the people who keep everyone safe and follow the law. The town of Galatone, where this happened, has about 15,400 people and is 26 kilometres from Lecce.

Difficult words: assault (to hurt or attack someone physically), nativity scene (a display that shows the birth of Jesus, usually with figures of Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, animals, and sometimes people acting as statues), fugitive (a person who is running away to avoid being caught by the police).

What reason did the man give for remaining in the Christmas nativity scene?
