Bear attacks in Japan – level 2

20-11-2025 07:00

Northern Japan sees more bear attacks, so police now cull bears to protect people. To learn better ideas, Japanese experts traveled to Montana in the US, where many specialist workers manage wild animals.

At a big workshop, experts from many countries talked about how people and bears meet more often and what problems this creates. In Japan, older civilian hunters do most of the work, and the number of hunters becomes smaller. In the US, trained workers respond quickly when people report bears. They also prevent problems by using electric fences, cleaning garbage, and teaching local communities how to stay safe.

Japanese experts say they need more trained workers and more jobs in this field to improve safety.

Difficult words: cull (to kill animals to control numbers), manage (to control or deal with something so it works well), civilian (a person who is not a soldier or not part of the police).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which preventative measures used by US trained workers help avoid problems with bears?
