Bear attacks in Japan – level 3

20-11-2025 07:00

In northern Japan, bear attacks have increased sharply, leading police to begin culling operations. To better understand solutions, Japanese experts visited Montana in the United States, a region known for effective wildlife management.

During a large international workshop there, specialists from over 20 countries discussed rising conflicts between humans and bears and exchanged strategies for prevention. One major difference is that Japan relies mainly on aging civilian hunters, while the US employs trained bear specialists who handle everything from damage control to emergency response. These workers receive full salaries, share their contact information publicly, and react quickly to reports from citizens.

Another key lesson from Montana is early prevention. Experts use electric fences, secure garbage, and constant community education to stop bears from returning to residential areas. This method not only protects people but also reduces the need for killing bears. Japanese participants noted that their country lacks specialists and that many students trained in the field cannot find related jobs. Strengthening expertise and creating stable career paths may help Japan address its growing bear crisis.

Difficult words: cull (to kill animals to control numbers), prevention (stop something before it happens), expertise (special skill or deep knowledge in a subject).
