Chicago Teachers Protest – level 3

04-11-2019 07:00

Thousands of students in Chicago have already missed one week of school. Teachers have been on strike since October 17. They demand smaller class sizes, more staff, and higher pay.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) have reached a deal but CTU is not satisfied with it. At the moment, the two sides agree on the main issues, but they cannot agree on exact numbers. CTU also wants CPS to put all promises in writing.

The Chicago Mayor, Lori Lightfoot, says that she is very disappointed with CTU’s reaction. She also says that the city does not have enough money for all what CTU wants. However, CTU and teachers believe that the city has a lot of money, but they do not spend it on education.

Difficult words: strike (an official protest when people stop working), demand (to ask for something officially), issue (a topic or problem which people discuss).
