Cubans fight for Russia – level 2

06-10-2023 07:00

Cubans are leaving their homes to work for the Russian army in Ukraine, a recent report said.

Yamidely Cervantes said how her husband left for Russia because he got a bonus of 200,000 rubles. This bonus is much bigger than a monthly salary in Cuba. La Federal, a small community in Cuba fights with high unemployment, and many men decide to leave and fight for Russia, because of money.

Some men want to fight while some choose non-fighting positions. The Cuban government denies that Cubans fight for Russia, but some reports say that more than a hundred men are training in Russia for military service. It is not clear where exactly they are.

Many men leave Cuba because there is an economic crisis, and they believe that they will make a lot of money in Russia.

Difficult words: bonus (extra money), unemployment (when someone is without a job), deny (to say that something is not true).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What incentives have the Cuban government provided to its citizens to keep them employed in Cuba?
