Denmark schools are using books again – level 3
12-01-2026 15:00
Denmark was one of the first countries to use digital tools in schools and public life.
Children have used tablets, digital books, and phones for many years. However, new data shows that too much screen time harms children’s mental health and school results. Many teenagers spend over five hours a day on their phones. Experts say this reduces focus, learning, and time with other people. Because of this, Denmark now changes direction.
Schools across the country ban mobile phones during lessons and breaks. Children place phones in locked boxes at the start of the day. Paper books return to classrooms, and teachers use computers only under control. Youth clubs and sports groups also ban phones. Adults notice better focus, more energy, and stronger social contact when phones are put away.
The government also plans limits on social media use for young people. A proposal aims to ban social media for children under fifteen, and many parents and groups support this change. Denmark hopes these steps help children grow more healthily and calmly.
Difficult words: focus (to pay full attention to something), direction (the way someone or something is moving or changing), aim (a goal or something you want to achieve).
