Fire in California – level 3

02-12-2019 07:00

On Monday, a wildfire started in southern California. The flames scorched at least 3,300 acres in Santa Barbara County, and high winds in the area help spread the flames.

Firefighters do not have any part of the fire contained. The fire has not destroyed any buildings, but many buildings are threatened.

The Santa Barbara County has asked California Governor, Gavin Newsom, to declare a state of emergency. Newsom said that officials are monitoring the fire, and they want to order mandatory evacuations.

Difficult words: scorch (to burn), contain (to get under control), mandatory (something that must be done by law).
