Fire in Rome – level 3

17-12-2018 07:00

Thick black smoke billowed up as a huge fire raged through a landfill site in north-eastern Rome. Firefighters battled to contain it and stop it from spreading toxic fumes over the city.

Residents were told to keep windows closed and to avoid locally grown food. They have expressed concerns about waste collection, so the city authorities called an emergency meeting.

Difficult words: billow (move), huge (very big), rage (spread quickly), landfill site (a site/place where people bury waste materials), battle (try hard), contain (bring under control), fume (a gas), resident (a person who lives somewhere), concern (a worry).
