Meta must pay and change its apps – level 2
02-09-2026 07:00
The company Meta agreed to pay a big settlement of 18 billion dollars (16.5 billion euros) to 48 American states. US officials accused Facebook and Instagram of harming the health of children.
Meta said it didn’t do anything wrong, but the company agreed to pay the money over ten years. Meta will also add new safety rules for teenagers on Facebook and Instagram. Teenagers will have a two-hour daily time limit, and the apps will be blocked at night and during school hours. Meta will also hide the number of likes on posts to help young people feel better.
Meta wants other big companies, like TikTok and YouTube, to follow these new safety rules as well to make the internet safer for all children.
Difficult words: settlement (an official agreement that resolves a disagreement or court case, often involving money), accuse (to say that someone has done something wrong, dishonest, or illegal), hide (to put something where people cannot see it, to not show something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What time limit will Meta set for teenagers' use of Facebook and Instagram, and when will the apps be blocked?
